A Blue Perspective: Free to roam

Although some people think I don't do any work at all, last friday was my last time at a full time job, at least for a little while.

The countless hours spent working well into the night for on-the-side clients or coding up experiments like widgEditor, then dragging myself off to inner-city offices with a severe lack of sleep made me realise that I found more joy in working for myself than for anyone else.

The constant pull between freelance and in-house work also began to have a detrimental effect upon the quality of my work and the quality of my life. You can't work all day, come home to more work and expect to maintain the enthusiasm which lead you to this career; let alone maintain high standards of quality. The choice, then, is to live a life of servitude or build something for yourself. So with all the courage I can muster I've decided to go it alone and concentrate on developing my own design business.

Most articles I've read say that you shouldn't start a business and expect to have more freedom, but I suppose it depends on how you look at it. You might spend more time working, but that work goes into something that you have a personal interest in. It's a freedom to create what you truly want.

Anyway, it won't affect my (infrequent) posting here, so what are you worried about? :o]

... and if you happen to have any work lying around, feel free to drop me a line.

    Good for you!
I tried that once, but thanks to my wife I am back at a design firm.

    Don't ask.

    Best of luck to you!

Congratulations, specially for having the nerve to do so. I for one wish I could be brave enough to do it but money issues keep chickening me out (Note to self: beef up those savings)

I've just gone the other way -- closed up my freelance business in exchange for for a senior position at a University. While the outcome is very different, my reasons were much the same as yours; you can't work all day and all night 7 days a week and still expect to keep the quality up... it just doesn't happen :(

    So what's your company called?

    Good luck mate.

In the olden days people used to resign from work to spend more time with their families. Theses days people leave work to spend more time with their blogs. I expect to see a lot more of this happening in the near future.

Good luck to you!  I went freelance 2 years ago, and it is the best decision I ever made.  It was rough at first, and the wife was nervious, but now that things are turning around, I wouldn't change it for the world.

    Congratulations!

You are 100% correct. I recently started performing freelance, and working on a major project I've been interested for over a year.

As it stands I work twice as much than I did at my day job, but I'm doing it because I want to, not because someone else wants me to.

So keep your head up and you'll go far. I promise. :)

PS: Spiffy job you did integrating widgEditor into your comments.

Bhatnagar provides the foilowlng quote from the Ramayana: “Rama was born on the Navami tithi of Shukla Paksha of Chaitra masa (9th day of the increasing phase of the moon in the lunar month of Chaitra). At that time, the nakshatra was Punarvasu, and Sun, Mars, Saturn, Jupiter and Venus were in Aries, Capricorn, Libra, Cancer and Pisces respectively. Lagna was Cancer and Jupiter & Moon were shining together. — Ramayana 1.18.8,9The conditions can be summarized as follows, according to Bhatnagar:1. Sun in Aries2. Saturn in Libra3. Jupiter in Cancer4. Venus in Pisces5. Mars in Capricorn6. Lunar month of Chaitra7. 9th day after New Moon (Navami Tithi, Shukla Paksh)8. Moon near Punarvasu Nakshatra (Pollux star in Gemini constellation)9. Cancer as Lagna (Cancer constellation rising in the east)10. Jupiter above the horizonAccording to the Planetarium software, it provides the foilowlng date: Sri Rama Navami 10th January 5114 BCE Birth Day of Rama, Observation at 12.30 p.m.Bhatnagar continues: “By using a powerful planetarium software, I found that the planetary positions mentioned in Ramayana for the date of birth of Lord Ram had occurred in the sky at around 12.30 p.m. of 10th January 5114 BC. It was the ninth day of the Shukla Paksh of Chaitra month too. Moving forward, after 25 years of the birth of Lord Ram, the position of planets in the sky tallies with their description in Ramayana. Again, on the amavasya (new moon) of the 10th month of the 13th year of exile the solar eclipse had indeed occurred and the particular arrangement of planets in the sky was visible. ( Date comes to 7th October, 5077 BC). Even the occurrence of subsequent two eclipses also tally with the respective description in Valmiki Ramayana. (Date of Hanuman’s meeting Sita at Lanka was 12th September, 5076 BC). In this manner the entire sequence of the planetary positions gets verified and all the dates can be precisely determined.â€
